Clos de Tart Grand Cru - Monopole 2014 - Wine

Tasting note

Gérard Basset MW OBE MS in Decanter February 2016 : 96 Vibrant, ripe blackberry plus delicate notes of rose, a gorgeous silky texture and sweet-spice finish. I tasted the seven parcels that make-up this final wine and it's clear there's a sensational synergy in the blending. Neal Martin in eRobertParker.com December 2015 : 95-97 It has a very well defined bouquet with cranberry and wild strawberry fruit, fine mineral tones and is quite harmonious with hints of wet limestone.

Informations

A charming vintage, with wines that are both concentrated and lively. 2014 benefitted from quite favourable vine growing conditions in spite of a highly contrasted season. The viticultural season: Thanks to a mild winter and equally mild spring (with an average temperature of +1.6°C for the first six months of the year) the vine growing started very soon. As early as March 27th, the buds were already in their cotton sheath then the vine unrolled its shoots and spread its leaves at a very quick pace. Flowering was logically early, starting on the 4th of June. As every vintage is a new beginning and has a story of its own, we had not benefitted from so good weather conditions for a long time at this important stage of vine growing. On June 28th, the Côte de Beaune and some parcels of the Côte de Nuits were hit by a hail storm but fortunately the Clos de Tart was spared any damage. End of July and end of August were cold and cloudy: a complete change after the first six months where sun and heat had been predominant. The grape maturing was very slow in August. Fortunately, in September, the famous north wind, expected by the all the vine growers at this period of the year, arrived on time in 2014. It is synonymous with dry, sunny and cool weather, the ideal conditions to complete the bunch maturity. After its arrival in the first days of September, the sun settled in for good, enabling the grapes to ripen fully in the best possible conditions. Harvesting was serenely done from September 17th to September 22nd with very ripe grapes and a yield that met our expectations: 31hl/ha. Vinification was carried out harmoniously and right from the beginning of aging, the wines already presented the charming profile that is typical of the vintage and they have kept these features up to now. After 18 months of maturing in new oak and the numerous blind tasting sessions of our seven different cuvées (each cuvée being composed according to the different micro-climates and vine ages) we decided to vinify two wines in 2014: The Clos de Tart and the Forge de Tart. Bottling lasted from March 23rd to March 30th 2016, and as usual, everything was done by gravity, taking into account the favourable phases of the lunar calendar. 2014 was the last vinification that Sylvain Pitiot carried out, the maturing being followed up in collaboration with Jacques Devauges, his successor, who was in charge of the bottling operations in particular. Here are the main features of Clos de Tart 2014 : Vines age: 60 years old on average Full flowering : 5th and 6th of June Harvest :from September18th to 22nd Yield : 31 hl/ha Average alcohol content : 13.5% volume Average pH : 3.58 Malo-lactic fermentation : June 2015 Aging : 17 months in new oak barrels Bottling : end of March 2016 As a conclusion, 2014 is a well-balanced vintage , this is probably due to the various conditions it had to go through during the vine growing seasons : ‘ hot' until the end of July, then ‘cold' in August (hence a slow maturing that suits Pinot Noir well) to finish with ideal conditions in September. Is this the reason why this wine presents a seducing character, ‘sweet' without being coarse, with depth and matter to it? It is difficult to answer this question as our comprehension of the constituting factors giving birth to a vintage style is still partial but it is undoubtedly a promising vintage that will charm the Burgundy and great wine lovers.
